Porcelain Veneers Gone BadPorcelain laminate dentistry is a technique specific procedure. Practically every brand and type of veneer product has been known to fail, unfortunately. What most patients don't realize is that it is rarely a fault of the veneer product.Training alone is insufficient for creating cosmetic changes patients want... that can and should endure for 10 to 20 years or more. Unsuccessful Veneer MakeoverThis 36 year old patient had veneers done by a well known New York City cosmetic dentist. It cost him $12,000 and he was extremely unhappy with the resulting esthetics.
Being Famous is not enoughThe history the patient gave was that when the veneers were placed they appeared "too fat, large and chunky." Although intimidated by the dentist's ego, the patient expressed his displeasure, at which point, the dentist proceeded to grind and re-shape the veneers.The patient still was not satisfied, so the exasperated dentist continued to grind away more porcelain, so much porcelain that the underlying tooth structure became visible. Notice in the picture above that there is a yellow tint bleeding through. So why is this a failure?First of all, the patient's bite is poor. There is not enough room for the left canine and there is an arch size discrepancy (the lower arch is wider than the upper arch). Furthermore:- on the patient's left side the teeth are sloping up - the midline is tilted (line between two front teeth) - the canine length is not proportionate to the central incisors (front teeth) - the color is mottled and varies for each tooth - the marginal integrity of the veneers is poor (visible from the back of the teeth) The patient was so traumatized by the experience, it took him years to buildup the courage and have confidence in another dentist to replace them. 
To gain his confidence, we digitally simulated a vision of his future smile and created a diagnostic wax-up model of the teeth. The patient had the freedom to determine how his new smile would appear before the precision veneers were made.Once this thorough analysis with the patient was completed our next step was to have DaVinci Veneers fabricated and placed. As can be seen in this second photo, even with the limitations of his bite we were able to create a dramatic difference. The patient had regained self esteem and had confidence once again not only in himself but in dentistry as well.
